Student Health Advisory Council

"Your voice for questions, concerns and suggestions involving Student Health Services"

Purpose

SHAC members serve as liaisons between the Students in all matters relating to health promotion and student health advocacy. Direct input allows the Health Service to be more responsive to the needs and interests of culturally diverse groups within the University community. SHAC's aim is to ensure that students receive health care that is receptive to their changing needs.

Benefits

Membership in SHAC affords students a variety of educational and experimental opportunities. As a member of SHAC you can:

  • Learn more about group dynamics and organizational behavior.
  • Sharpen problem solving and decision making skills.
  • Gain health related experience.
  • Meet other UConn students by planning and promoting health events.
  • Interact with health care professionals through Students Health Service committees.
Projects

SHAC, Spring 2007

Student Health Advocates

  • SHAC provides Student Health Advocates to assist students with any concerns or suggestions regarding general health related issues.

Healthier UConnections

  • SHAC and the Health Education Office publish a student health newsletter each semester. It includes current articles on health promotion and wellness, as well as a schedule of educational programs and activities.

Annual Health Fair

  • SHAC and Health Education Office sponsor a large scale health fair each year, with more than 40 health-related exhibits, films, health screenings and educational workshops.

  • Sexual Awareness Week
  • World AIDS Day
  • National Alcohol Awareness Month
  • National Nutrition Month

How to Join

SHAC, a registered student organization, opens its membership to all undergraduate and graduate students. Members regularly attend meetings in addition to involvement in various projects and events.
